Supporting and Delivering Innovations

Supporting Innovation

NHS Innovations South West is a not-for profit organisation, funded by the South West Strategic Health Authority. We have a proven track record in developing medical devices, therapeutics, diagnostics, software & service delivery innovations to maximise benefits for patients, NHS staff and the wider healthcare community.

NHS Innovations South West consists of Business Development Managers and a network of Trust based Innovation Leaders (TILs) who work closely with NHS staff with an aim to bring these ideas to reality.

NNHS Innovations South West has created a complete support infrastructure to enable the identification and development of the Trusts Intellectual Property for the benefit of the Trust and the wider healthcare sector. We work through a stage-gate process to bring ideas from concept through to reality. An outline of the steps can be seen below:
  • Initial Assessment
  • Objective Research
  • Strategy Creation
  • Development Plan
  • Commercialisation

Delivering Innovation

Our service is delivered by experienced business development managers and professionally trained and accredited Trust Innovation Leaders (TILs). The TILs are NHS employees located at several Trusts throughout the South West region.

TILs support their colleagues by encouraging them to come forward with ideas they already have, or give them the confidence to come up with ideas that can have an impact on their areas of expertise.

Once the innovations are discovered, the TILs work with the inventor to assess the opportunity and support the project through the development stages.

If it has been determined that an idea has commercial potential the project will be managed through to completion by a Business Development Manager.

For Trusts without an innovation lead, ideas can be directed to an experienced Business Development Manager for assessment.
