How to get Started

Your ideas make a difference.

Are you a NHS employee in the South West of England? If you are, NHS Innovations South West (NISW) can help you make your idea a reality. We help to evaluate the potential of your concept and find the best way forward for the idea. We are particularly interested in ideas that could really make a difference to patients, your colleagues or the NHS in general.

If you have an idea and you want unbiased advice and guidance about taking your idea forward then please contact us. NISW will deal with any enquiries as confidential.

Firstly, there are a couple of things that you should do.
  1. Make sure that you do not disclose your idea to anyone. This can harm the potential of your idea to be commercialised and taken to market.
  2. All employees of the NHS are subject to the Intellectual Policy of their employing organisation. It is worth speaking to your Trust Innovation Leader, your R&D department or us (in confidence) to help clarify the position regarding ownership of any new ideas.
In most cases your concept is automatically the property of your Trust. However, as the inventor, if there is any financial return from the development of your idea then you may be entitled to a share.

In addition, being an employee of a NHS organisation enables you access to the services of NISW and the NHS Innovation Hub network. We can help evaluate your idea and find ways for it to be realised. We broker partnerships with external organisations and have access to legal and business development support.
