Summary
Kathryn Smith has been working with NHS Innovations South West to develop the BeSMaRT Cart™ as a commercial product, available to benefit patients around the UK. The hub has helped develop a business plan and secure a license deal with a commercial manufacturer of sensory equipment.
The Problem
In 2005, Kathryn was tasked with the challenge of designing a facility at her place of work that could double as both a ‘136 suite de-escalation room’ (mental health intensive care unit) and a sensory room.
The Solution
Working with husband Jeremy and a designer, colleagues and service users at Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust, Kathryn created the BeSMaRT Cart™, an award-winning innovation which has proved its worth, with interest from many fields of mental health, not just acute care for adult patients.
