NISW provides innovation and intellectual property management services to the NHS in the South West of England. Recognising the value of the huge knowledge base within the NHS, NISW has created a network in which Trust Innovation Leaders work hand in hand with NISW Innovation Managers to search, identify and realise the benefits that can be gained through innovative ideas and concepts.
NISW recognises the important role that organisations outside the NHS play in facilitating innovation. By partnering with industry, academia and the health service, NISW brings together the necessary components to take an innovative idea and turn it into a reality.

Innovation Management
NISW works on a wide variety of innovations from medical devices and diagnostics to educational materials and computer software and acts as the link between industry and the NHS. NISW drives innovation with an objective to maximise the potential opportunity often by forging links with commercial partners. Four important steps to effective commercialization include:
- The evaluation and protection of the idea;
- The development of the concept;
- The search for strategic partners with the right mix of skills, experience and market presence;
- Agreement with partners to exploit the innovation;
Brokering
NISW facilitates relationships between NHS innovators and commercial parties.
